The UK remote market in 2026
Britain settled into hybrid rather than remote. ONS survey data for January to March 2025 puts 28% of working adults in Great Britain on a hybrid pattern, 14% working from home only, and 44% travelling to work every day.
That 28% is high by European standards and it is the number that shapes the job market you are searching. Most British employers offering flexibility mean two or three days in an office, and they will describe that as remote in a job title and then mention the commute in round two. It is worth asking about location expectations in a first call rather than a fourth.
The 14% fully at home is the pool this board draws from, and it is why UK candidates often do better applying to EU-based or globally distributed employers than to British ones. A company with no UK office has no office to call you back to.
The UK is not in the Eurostat working-from-home series, so these figures are not directly comparable with the continental ones elsewhere on the site. Different survey, different question.
Right to work in the UK
If you are a British or Irish citizen, this section does not apply to you. Irish citizens work in the UK freely under the Common Travel Area, which survived Brexit intact.
Everyone else needs immigration permission, including EU, EEA and Swiss nationals. Freedom of movement ended and it did not leave a soft landing. If you were living in the UK before the end of 2020 you may hold settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, and that is what gives you the right to work rather than your passport.
Employers have to check, and they are motivated to check properly. The civil penalty for employing someone without the right to work rose to £45,000 per worker for a first breach and £60,000 for repeat breaches in February 2024. In practice you will be asked for a share code so the employer can verify your status online.
The main sponsored route is the Skilled Worker visa, and it got harder in 2025. From 22 July 2025 the minimum skill level rose to RQF level 6, which is degree level. Roles at RQF 3 to 5 closed except through the Immigration Salary List or the new Temporary Shortage List, with transitional protection for people already on the route. The general salary threshold is £41,700 or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher, with lower thresholds for specific cases including PhD holders and shortage roles.
The UK has no digital nomad visa and no remote worker route.
Pay
The ONS puts median gross annual pay for full-time employees at £39,039 as of April 2025, up 4.3% on the year. Tech roles sit well above that, though the ONS occupation-level breakdown is not something we can quote precisely here.
The more useful thing to know is that fully remote UK roles are increasingly priced against a national rather than a London benchmark. If you are in London taking a remote role, check whether the salary was set with a London weighting or without one, because the difference is real and it is rarely volunteered.
Where to look next
If you are UK-based and finding the domestic market thin, the highest-yield move is applying to employers with no UK office at all. Fully distributed companies hiring in the UK include Canonical, which has been distributed since 2004 and is UK-registered, GitLab, which employs through a UK entity, and Grafana Labs and Automattic, both of which hire in the UK.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many remote jobs are there in the UK?
There are more than 1000 UK remote jobs on this page right now, updated daily. Across the wider market, ONS data suggests 14% of working adults work from home only and 28% work hybrid, so the fully remote share of any given job board is a fraction of total vacancies.
Do I need the right to work in the UK for a UK remote job?
Yes, unless the employer sponsors you. Being remote does not change it. You need permission to work in the country you are physically in, and for a UK-based role that is normally the UK. Irish citizens are covered by the Common Travel Area. If based in the Republic of Ireland, you can browse remote jobs Ireland.
Can I work remotely from the UK for an EU company?
You need the right to work in the UK, which you already have if you are a British or Irish citizen or hold settled status. The employer then needs a way to pay you, usually a UK entity, UK payroll or an Employer of Record. Many EU companies have one, so this is a common arrangement.
Is there a UK digital nomad visa?
No. The UK has not introduced one and there is no remote worker route in the immigration rules.
Are UK remote jobs paid less than London office jobs?
Sometimes, because remote salaries are more often set against a national benchmark than a London one. Ask which benchmark was used before you get to the offer stage.
