Post a job

Worldwide is the most oversold tag in remote hiring. Genuinely location-independent roles exist, but they are a small porportion of what gets labelled that way. There are hundreds of worldwide-tagged roles here, from companies including GitLab, Mozilla, Kraken, Supabase and the Wikimedia Foundation.

  • 5-10% of live remote jobs are truely work from anywhere
  • FlexJobs: around 95% of remote jobs carry a location requirement
  • Contract types: typically freelance / contractor arrangements

Read the small print on “work from anywhere”

FlexJobs, which has categorised remote listings for two decades, puts it plainly: around 95% of remote jobs require the employee to be based in a particular location. Genuinely unrestricted work-from-anywhere roles are roughly one in twenty. FlexJobs runs them as a separate, narrower category for exactly that reason.

So a worldwide tag is a starting point, not a promise. The listing text is where the truth lives, and it usually contains one of three qualifications: a time zone band, a list of eligible countries, or a contractor-only clause.

None of that makes the tag useless. It means these employers are not restricting by country the way most do, which is a meaningfully better starting position than a role open to one city. It just is not the same as “anywhere”.

The seven reasons a global role still has a location line

FlexJobs sets out why, and each of these is enough on its own: professional licensing and certification, proximity to clients, time zone overlap, employment and tax law compliance, payroll and benefits obligations, pay transparency law, and data protection or data residency rules.

Two of those bite hardest. Compliance, because getting it wrong is expensive: Remote.com’s 2025 research puts the average cost of a compliance incident at $42,000, with 74% of employers reporting they have hit one. And time zones, because no legal structure fixes a twelve-hour gap between you and the people you need to talk to.

Right to work does not travel with you

Worth repeating on this page in particular, because the worldwide tag encourages the opposite assumption.

You need authorisation to work in the country where you are physically located. Your employer’s location is irrelevant to this, and so is the fact that the work is remote. Immigration guidance across jurisdictions is consistent on the point: work performed in a country falls under that country’s rules even where the entire benefit flows to an overseas employer.

Practically, this means two separate things have to be true before a worldwide role can hire you. The employer needs a route to pay you where you live, whether through a local entity, an Employer of Record, or a contractor agreement. And you need to hold the right to work there already, whether through citizenship, a residence permit, or a visa you obtained yourself.

A digital nomad visa does not usually solve this, and it is the most common misunderstanding we see. Most of them explicitly prohibit working for local companies and require your employer or clients to be outside the country. Greece’s guidance is blunt: you will not have the right to work for a Greek company, permanently or freelance. Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Spain all carry the same restriction in some form. These visas let you live somewhere while working for someone else’s economy. They are not a hiring route.

How genuinely distributed companies are structured

The companies that hire close to globally tend to be the ones that built for it from the start rather than adding remote later, and their public numbers are worth knowing because they show what the ceiling actually looks like.

Automattic reports 1,435 people across 83 countries and lets everyone choose their location and hours. Canonical has been fully distributed since 2004, with the caveat that it expects staff to travel for in-person sprints at least twice a year. Supabase says it has no offices at all, with 350 or more people across 60 or more countries. Toggl has been fully remote since 2014 and spans 43 countries and 16 time zones. Buffer runs 73 people across 22 countries and 11 time zones. Doist places no restriction on location whatsoever.

Grafana Labs is the clearest illustration of how the constraint actually works. It is 100% remote with 1,600 or more people in 40 or more countries, and it provides healthcare in nine countries and retirement benefits in eight. The hiring reach and the benefits reach are different numbers, and that gap is where the eligibility list comes from.

Contract type matters more here

Because worldwide employers are hiring across many jurisdictions, they lean harder on contractor agreements and Employer of Record arrangements than employers hiring in one / or a few countries do. That affects your notice period, your paid leave, your sick pay, your pension and your protection against dismissal, and none of those are visible from the job title.

If a role is contractor-only, work out what you are giving up and price it in when negotiating your compensation. In several European countries, the tax treatment can leave you better off, but the employment protections do not come back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does worldwide really mean anywhere?

Rarely. FlexJobs finds around 95% of remote roles carry a location requirement of some kind. Read the listing for a time zone band, an eligible country list, or a contractor-only clause.

Can I take a worldwide role while travelling?

It depends on the employer and on where you are. Your tax residence and social security position can change if you spend enough time in another country, and some employers set a limit on how long you can work outside your registered location. Ask before you book anything long.

Will a digital nomad visa let me take these jobs?

Not usually, and this is worth checking carefully. Most digital nomad visas require your employer to be outside the country and explicitly forbid working for local companies. They let you live somewhere while working remotely for a foreign employer, which is a different thing from being hired locally.

Are worldwide roles paid globally or by location?

Both models exist. Some employers pay a single global rate, others adjust by location. It is a fair question to ask in a first interview and the answer tells you a lot about the company.

Which companies genuinely hire anywhere?

Automattic, Canonical, Supabase, Toggl, Buffer and Doist all publish fully distributed models with staff across dozens of countries. Even then, benefits and payroll routes vary by country, so check the specific listing.
